Eating our 5-a-day was introduced by World Health Organization (WHO) in 1980’s as an effort to solve the problem of uprising heart diseases, as fruits and vegetables are evidently proven to reduce such risk. 5-a-day recommends minimum consumption of 5 servings (80g per serving) of fruits and vegetables daily. Based on researches, the ideal minimum would be 7-8 servings per day, however 5 servings was far more achievable for most people then, hence 5-a-day was introduced, with a balanced ratio of vegetables to fruits (3:2).
It doesn’t sound difficult to achieve 5-a-day (8-a-day, ideally), however it may come as a surprise to you that majority of us are not consuming that recommended portion. Let’s put this to a test and evaluate the food we consume on a daily basis. Ask yourself these questions and write down your answers.
Q1: List down your typical breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for a day.
Q2: How many servings of fruits and vegetables are incorporated into all of those meals?
(Note: 1 serving = 80g, approximately a fist size)
Q3: Do your overall weekly fruit and vegetable intake varies in types and colour? (eg: dark green, red/purple, orange, yellow etc)
We’ve recently carried out a survey based on those questions, and we’ve gathered that 90% of our focus group are not meeting their 5-a-day on most days. And majority of them are struggling with consuming a variety of different fruit and vegetable groups. If you’re part of the 90%, look again into taking baby steps to incorporate 5-a-day and work towards 8-a-day. You’ll begin to see an improvement in your digestion, energy level, complexion, weight, and in turn feeling light, happy and inspired. Here are a few tips to help you achieve your 8-a-day!
Tip#1: Incorporate a serving of vegetable into every meal, including breakfast.
Tip#2: Have a full-sized salad as one of your meals (lunch recommended, to avoid the mid-day snooze)
